Almost all nutritious food has fat in it. Fats are used for a variety of purposes including transporting vital nutrients to cells, assisting in digestion of certain foods, and providing us with energy in times of nutrient depletion. To be healthy you can’t, and shouldn’t, stay away from fat. Still we find ourselves asking:
How much fat should I eat in a day?
What are the pros and cons of eating low-fat or fat-free?
What kind of fat should I be eating most?
Which foods provide healthy fats and which foods will kill me quickly?
It all depends on a couple factors:
- Current bodyweight
- Dietary goals
- Cholesterol profile
- Activity level
- Time of day
The American Heart Association recommends limiting dietary fat to 30% of total calories. Take into consideration however, if you are overweight, need to lower blood cholesterol, or have another medical concern, you may need less than the recommended 30%.
Why do I Need to Eat Fat?
Fats are vital to many of the body’s primary functions, specifically digestion and nutrient absorption. The main form of fat found in food and also found in the body, makes up most of the body’s stored energy. You may have heard of these type of fats before, we call them triglycerides. When your body is at rest or performing activity of a low intensity, it generates most of its energy from free fatty acids, which are released from the body’s stores of triglycerides.
The calories in fat molecules (9 calories per gram) provide more than twice as much energy as carbs and protein (4 calories per gram). This is especially true in a glycogen depleted state, in which the body turns to fat for nearly all of its energy.
Lipids (fats) in foods transport fat-soluble vitamins to the intestines. This facilitates the absorption of of many vital nutrients such as A ,D, E and K. You risk developing deficiencies for some of these nutrients without an adequate amount of fat in your diet.
Eating foods that are high in fat helps us moderate our appetite through two means:
- fat satiates hunger; you feel more satisfied after eating when you consume a meal higher in fat
- since fat digests slower than carbs or protein, the presence of fat in the digestive system slows down the digestion process. This means a higher fat meal will stay in your stomach longer than a lower fat meal.
You might find yourself faced with increased hunger when your intake of calories from fat is reduced below 20% of total caloric intake.
Omega-3s and Omega-6s, the essential fatty acids, need to be ingested as part of the diet, as they cannot be manufactured within the body. These nutrients are the essential building blocks of compounds and molecules that are responsible for performing vital bodily functions such as helping blood to clot, immune system response, and blood pressure regulation. In women, the essential fatty acids also aid in healthy childbirth. The essential fatty acids can be found in foods containing soybean or canola oil, as well as in sardines, tuna, and salmon.
We also need to be aware that when fat is removed from most foods, the food manufacturers usually add carbohydrates in order to preserve a desirable taste and texture. Typically these carbohydrates are the worst kind of carbs for your body as they are mostly high-glycemic, processed refined sugars. Many low-fat and fat-free products remain energy dense for just this reason, since they still contain a high concentration of calories from carbohydrates rather than fat.
We always need to remember that the source of our calories counts. Whether they come from fat, protein, or carbs we always need to be sure to use moderation when choosing portion sizes, even when eating fat-reduced foods. By now everyone is aware that the increasing variety of lower fat items is directly proportional to the American average weight going up, up, up. Eating reduced fat or fat free is not the solution for weight loss. In fact, eating too many of these foods over the course of our childhood, teenage, and young adult years, can often lead to nasty diseases such as adult-onset type II diabetes.
Why Should I Stay Away From Fat?
The answer is simple: you shouldn’t. The folks that should really stay away from fat the most are those with high cholesterol, and even then, they should be sure to consume the proper ratio and amounts of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids to stay healthy. If you have been told by your doctor that you need to reduce cholesterol, you should attempt to stay away from pork, beef, and eggs. Also check labels often for cholesterol content, because something like a salad dressing might contain more cholesterol than you think.
If you are extremely overweight, you will probably want to go easy on the fat only because it is so calorie dense. But in the same respect, if you are willing to bring your carbohydrate intake under 100 grams per day, then you should replace those lost carbs with protein and healthy fats.
When Should I Stay Away From Fat?
During the day you will probably want to stay away from fat late at night, and anytime near or around a workout. You want glycogen to be readily available, so you won’t want slow down digestion by consuming fat before or during a workout. Doing so would also steal blood away from your extremities to send to the stomach to assist with digestion. It may sound petty, but every little bit counts. You also want to get fat-free glycogen back into the muscles ASAP after training. Therefore your post workout shake should contain 0 grams of fat if possible. My post workout shake contains, no sugar added apple sauce, cinnamon, waxy maze (Dymatize Flud), and Quattro Protein.
In conclusion we can say that fat is good. Deriving 30-40% of your daily calories from fat is acceptable. Try to eat healthy fats from fruits, veggies, fish, eggs, nuts, and canola/soybean/olive oil. Minimize trans fats and saturated fats, making sure not to eat fats that are solid at room temperature like butter and animal fat. Try not to cook with fat either, since cooking healthy fats actually makes them unhealthy fats.
Eating a lower calorie, higher protein, higher healthy fat, lower carb kind of diet is one sure way to stay healthy and lose some weight. This is the type of lifestyle that can be permanent and effective!
Best Boot Camp!!
I am so happy with Wired Fitness’ Bootcamp workouts! I have been working out with Bryan and the other trainers for over 6 years now, and have to say it is by far the best work out around. I continue to be challenged week after week, and what I love is the variety of workouts that we do. It is always different, so you don’t get bored like you might in a gym or running. Trust me, if you want to get in shape or stay in shape, try Wired Fitness and you will be so happy you did!
Best one hour workout ever!!!
I’m a runner, and I go to the gym on a regular basis, but it’s nothing compared to the this boot camp. I’ve never been a group workout person, but now I can say I’m officially a fan. The trainers are great and friendly, always there to help, at least two trainers per session that has a group more than 5 persons. Bryan, Alvin and Amber are awesome trainers. Come out and try it and you will see it’s the best investment on yourself ever.
As I go on my third year with Wired Fitness I can honestly say I AM ADDICTED! When I first started the classes I had not done any type of physical activity since I had my first son 9 years ago and was still carrying around the baby weight. In just a few short months the pounds and inches melted off. All 20 of them! Since then I have had my second son and was able to maintain my works out through my 5th month of pregnancy. When I came back to the classes 8 weeks after having my son it was difficult but the trainers catered to my needs and were able to help me lose all of my pregnancy weight in 3 months!! I’m in better shape now than I have ever been. All the trainers are great and cater to every level of fitness. A special shot out to Amber at Eastlake who always keeps me motivated and challenged 🙂
WOW! No Looking Back…
I’ve been active my whole adult life… bike racing/touring, swimming, triathlons: a marathon, a handful of half-ironman’s, and countless centuries… always been aerobically fit, but in my late 40’s, I felt like I’ve been slowing down and putting on more lbs… after a particularly busy spring, work-wise, I heard about this workout my friends were doing and decided to give it a try… WOW, No looking back! I’ve never had my butt thrashed as consistently and thoroughly as in these 1 hour workouts… Always different, always fun, all the trainers are top notch–supportive and friendly… I’ve been attending 3-4 times per week, and incidentally (it was never a goal), I’ve dropped 25+ lbs and put on some lean muscle… I look forward to these workouts all the time, and on those rare occasions when I have to miss one, I have serious withdrawals…. I can’t more highly recommend giving Wired Fitness a shot for your next workout!

I could feel the difference immediately… I thought I was decently fit before coming to Wired Fitness, doing strength and cardio workouts on my own. But after going to Bryan’s classes for a few weeks, I could see and feel the difference his workouts made. His workouts are challenging and interesting (never boring!), and I love working out outside in beautiful San Diego with such a great group of people to support and motivate me (at a time and location that work perfectly in my schedule). Bryan comes off as a pretty tough guy, but I know it’s because he knows his stuff and wants everyone to get the results they want. So just be sure that when you sign up for a class, you show up on time and give it your best, and you’ll see results!
I’m definitely hooked! I starting attending Wired Fitness Boot Camp in April 2012 through my Groupon purchase. Since then I’ve been hooked on this boot camp. Prior to this boot camp I was working out at the gym taking group classes. I hit a plateau with my workout and I wasn’t getting any results. I was looking for a workout that would challenge and build my endurance and add more strength training. This boot camp did exactly that for me and much more. I have seen such a drastic change physically in just these past 8 months than I have in the last 3 years with my previous workout regimen. I highly recommend this boot camp to anyone who is looking to challenge themselves and really work your butt off. The trainers are very supportive and friendly. They really motivate the class and push us to work hard. I’m definitely hooked and I really look forward to my workouts.
Loving every minute of it… Going on 3 years with Wired Fitness and loving every minute of it!!! Prior to joining I had tried multiple gyms, bootcamps, and different workout routines but nothing kept me motivated enough to work out consistently on a regular basis. The challenge I get from these workouts is addicting and keeps me attending 3-4 classes a week!! Every workout is a unique experience and is constantly varied. The work outs are high intensity and the trainers accommodate every level of fitness. Three weeks ago I completed my first Triathlon and I owe it all to Wired Fitness. If it wasn’t for the energy and strength I discovered in these workouts, I would have never thought capable of achieving such endurance. To think that 4 years ago I came off the couch from not having done any physical activity in over a decade, suffering from high blood pressure/cholesterol…to where I am now!! I’ve had the privilege of working out with every trainer at Wired Fitness and have enjoyed each trainers exclusive approach! Special shot out to Amber from their Eastlake class and of course to Bryan “The Muscle Man” Schuler from Mission Bay!! Wired Fitness has a “Lifer” in me and I’m confident you will be too if you give them a try.
Always a challenge… Best workout you can get in an hour. Each day is different so you never get bored. Its always a challenge no matter how long you have been going! Great trainers and classmates!
Absolutely love it! I have been going to Wired Fitness’ Boot Camp in Mission Bay for over 6 months and absolutely love it! It sounds cliche, but I really have seen great results from going 3 times a week. I love the group setting, how closely Bryan watches our form, and how challenging it is. I like that they create the hard workouts for me! I have been to classes with Alvin as well, and love them all! Boot Camp isn’t for everyone. So, come with realistic expectations of your fitness level and what boot camp means…after all, it is named after military workouts.
Kind to all levels of physical ability… I started with Wired Fitness almost a year ago. At that time I was so out of shape that I thought I was going to pass out in the first class. What had me coming back for more was my friend who had purchased a coupon and needed a work out buddy. We still are work out buddies and still loving Wired Fitness. Bryan is actually a marshmallow with a gruff coating. He is more than willing to work with clients both financially and alternating exercises when needed, but his job like all the instructors is to get the clients to push themselves out of their comfort zone and regain some sense of physical and proud moments of achievements. I may be the oldest and if I am honest with myself I still am not where I want to be, but at least am not sitting in front of the TV Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. I encourage all you want to feel good about themselves to come down to MB and try a class. I go to the class from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, the time goes by so fast sometimes it is 7:45pm. Alvin my instructor along with the others truly value what they do and I find them to be passionate, professional and kind to all levels of physical ability and ages.
Best workout in San Diego Wired Fitness is the best workout in San Diego. Bryan and his trainers are great and really care about their clients. It’s something different at every class and who doesn’t want to workout on the beach year round. We are not just a workout Group we are also a family. I give them 5 stars.
Killer workout every time!I’ve been going to Wired Fitness Bootcamps about two years now and I love it! I have a knee injury and when I first started I had to wear a knee brace. I wasn’t able to run, jump, or even skip. Bryan and his staff modified the exercises for me so that I still got a killer work out every time. Over that last couple years I’ve been able to strengthen my knee by going to Wired Fitness Bootcamp classes regularly and haven’t had to wear my brace recently. And, I’ve even been able to start running again! I am so glad I joined, it was just what I needed to get back into exercising after being injured. Every class is different and after two years I still feel challenged. I recommend Wired Fitness to all of my family and friends that are looking for a great workout!
Challenging my body in ways I couldn’t do on my own.I signed up for Wired Fitness Bootcamps in March 2012 through a Groupon deal because I was bored of my gym workouts. The bootcamp classes got me outside and challenging my body in ways I could not do on my own. Ten months later I am still attending classes weekly; this bootcamp continues to push my body’s limits in ways I did not think were possible. I am now preparing for my wedding and I wouldn’t trust results to any other program or trainer. Bryan is the best trainer to push me to where I want to be. Wired Fitness is a great program for those who want a challenge and want results.
